The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department bid a fond farewell to an old friend today. Last week the sealed bids for Engine 2 were opened. Who would win the bid and where would the truck end up?
The worse fear was that a junk yard would get the truck. The firefighters hoped a department in need of a good, used truck would get the bid. Only two bids were received. The first bid opened was for a little over $1,100 and to a scrap yard in New Jersey – a very sad, sad reality check.
The second bid, only at $3,300, was to a collector from Waterbury – there was a ray of sunshine. If a fire department didn’t bid on the truck at least someone who was going to appreciate the truck did. And luckily, the Board of Selectman awarded the bid to the high bidder.
The Hychko Family from Waterbury arrived today to pick up the truck. Mr. Hychko and his two boys arrived with their eyes wide and shiny. The excitement that the three men brought with them was like three kids in a candy shop or three young men with their first new sports car. They were three feet off the ground. They couldn’t wait to tell us the plans they had for the truck. And our members were eager to hear that the truck was going to stay intact and placed as a museum piece.
Several members, who were at the station when the Hychklo arrived, showed them the truck. They helped them drain the pump and went over all the little items that they wanted to know about the truck. Mr. Hychko promised to keep the truck in tip – top shape and we promised to go and help them in the spring go over anything they need to know that we didn’t cover.
The truck had been housed at the Orenaug over 16 years. It spent its final 4 years in the
Hotchkissville Station.
It was a sad moment to see the truck drive out of the station on final time. But, it is going to a very good home and that all we could ask for.
