At approximately 6:00am Lt. Ryan Murphy was on his way to work in Meriden when the transformer and power lines at the intersection of Flanders Road and Elephant Rock Road started sparking and popping in front of him.
Lt. Murphy called into Woodbury Dispatch and reported the situation and requested the WVFD to the scene.
Cpt. Shaker and Lt. Hatstat responded directly to the scene. All other personnel responded to the Orenaug station and stood by for instructions.
The incident, which was more of a traffic issue with safety concerns to the general public that a fire emergency, did not need any additional firefighters at the scene.
The road was shut down at Route 6 (Main Street) and at Chohes Trail for a little over 2.5 hours. CL&P arrived on scene around 9am and was able to turn the power off so the road could reopen. As luck would have it, due to the current snow storm, school was closed so bus traffic was not a problem.
