| Members of the Woodbury Fire Department
recently attended vehicle rescue training offered
by the Connecticut Fire Academy. |
| |
| This picture shows the end result of a vehicle
having its doors and roof removed, and using
hydraulic tools to perform a dashboard roll. This
technique is used to extricate a victim trapped by
the dashboard or steering wheel. |

| Woodbury firefighters are shown
extinguishing a car fire during a live-fire training
session. The hose team on the right is advancing towards
the fire, with a back-up team standing by. |
| |
| With the generous assistance of a local
salvage yard, three vehicles were burned, allowing
members to practice the skills required to control
the hazards presented during these incidents. |

| Ice and cold water rescue was the
topic of a drill held last winter. A "victim" is
being removed from the icy water of a local pond. |
| |
| Wearing special cold water suits,
firefighters are required to set up equipment and
reach the victim within 3 minutes of arrival on scene. |

| Fire apparatus drivers are required
to complete annual certification, demonstrating
driving and pump operation competency. |

| This driver is working his way through
an obstacle course designed to test his ability to
maneuver through narrow streets or driveways. |

| Woodbury firefighters recently
participated in joint training with the Woodbury
Ambulance Association. Ambulance EMTs were presented
with an "injured" firefighter and learned how to
remove protective clothing, including Self
Contained Breathing Apparatus, prior to treating
the injuries. |
| |
| Fire department and ambulance
personnel frequently train together, with many
firefighters cross-trained as EMTs. |

| Firefighters prepare to attack
a Liquid Propane Gas fire, at a training session
sponsored by a local LPG company. |
| |
| Members learned how to control
LPG leaks and fires in residential, commercial
and motor vehicle applications, focusing on
teamwork and safety. |
