WOODBURY – The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department extinguished an electrical transformer fire that briefly caused evacuation of 11 units in the Woodlake development Sunday night November 24th. “It was a sound-and-light display,” said Fire Captain Corey Shaker. “Lots of crackling and popping. Lots of electrical sparks and bursts. Fortunately there were no injuries.”
Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan said the apparent cause was a transformer on Heather Court that blew out in the heavy rain about 4pm and followed cable TV circuits “looking for a ground.” The department deployed its entire force of seven major firefighting vehicles plus smaller units and called in mutual-aid support from neighboring communities. Bethlehem sent firefighters and a truck to cover Woodbury while the town’s units were engaged. Southbury provided a truck and fire personnel to assist in door-to-door canvassing for possible injuries and other fires. The Woodbury Ambulance Association also was on hand for any medical emergency, Chief Morgan said.
She said Eversource emergency trucks were on the scene within 20 minutes, followed closely by Charter service vehicles. Fire damaged a wall in one unit but in the end no one was displaced overnight, Chief Morgan said.
